THE COMPANY:

Our client, the Daily Bread Food Bank, is looking for a Food Quality Specialist to be a crucial member in their mission of ending hunger in our city! More specifically, they're looking for an experienced HAACP Specialist to ensure that food safety and quality assurance programs are properly implemented and maintained following company, customer and regulatory guidelines through auditing/inspection, product quality control and data entry.

Procuring and collecting food donations from generous and benevolent donors; receiving and warehousing donations in their 110,000 sq. ft. warehouse (ambient, cooler & freezer), packing and transporting food to their 135 partner agencies, the Daily Bread Food Bank moves over 10 million pounds of food annually and provides much needed sustenance to innumerable families around the city.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Reporting directly to the Vice President of this universally respected organization, this is a rare opportunity to effect significant change AND have your wisdom received by senior management. As a member of Operations team, the HAACP/Food Quality Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance, ongoing review, and continuous improvement/yearly assessment of quality assurance and food safety programs at Daily Bread. These programs include, but are not limited to: Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) Plans, and the yearly Validation Studies expected in accordance with the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for HACCP maintenance, ongoing HACCP reassessment, monitoring and verification
  • Identify any Food Safety and HACCP-related Work Requests generating from Condition Audits, Sanitation Monitoring, Pre-op inspections, 3rd Party audits, or any Food Safety failures
  • Update SOPs and forms from HACCP reassessments, program changes, etc. as necessary
  • Conduct monthly audits to verify compliance with FSEP pre-requisites bullets and HACCP
  • Will lead food safety training for all staff, volunteers and potentially Daily Bread agencies
  • Works directly with other departments to meet and exceed CFIA quality and safety requirements
  • As required, assists on trouble-shooting processing lines and provides solutions to operations that target food safety requirements
  • Evaluates donated products and on hold products, suggests disposition
  • Assists in data entry for all monitoring and verification activities as required. Prepares reports as necessary to record findings and recommendations from testing
  • Cross Contamination Controls Management
  • Supplier recommendations
  • Recall Program Management
  • Food Defense / Food Fraud Program Management / Implementation
  • Provide back-up support to Functional Area Operations Supervisors
  • Participate in projects and meetings as required
  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Must have in-depth HACCP experience including; program development, implementation of programs and auditing of the program
  • Understands and applies safe work practices and principles
  • Identifies potential hazards and works to remedy them
  • Proven leadership skills with ability to effectively communicate to all levels of internal and external organizations
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational and presentation skills
  • Self-directed; ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Ability to project manage cross-functional where necessary
  • Ability to drive change

QUALIFICATIONS:

2 to 3 years of food related experience in areas of GMP and HACCP principles and programs

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The incumbent works in an office/warehouse environment. Occasionally can work from home, however majority of role is in-person. Year-round there is occasional overtime during the week and some weekends, with more overtime at peak season (October-January).

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:

The HACCP Specialist liaises daily with several other Daily Bread departments including, but not limited to Operations (warehouse), facilities, Development / Food Procurement and Programs & Services. External relationships may include those with member agencies, suppliers, donors, and the general public as they support Daily Bread distribution operations.

EDUCATION:

University degree or college diploma preferably in Chemistry, Microbiology, Food Science or a related discipline.

COMPENSATION:

Comprehensive compensation program, commensurate with experience, and in-line with the not-for-profit status of the organization.
